Citrix please wait for the group policy client

I have a couple servers that when rebooted will hang for 60 - 90 minutes saying "Please wait for the group policy client" Does anyone know what causes this or how I can fix it short of rebuilding the servers from scratch?

If I disconnect the server from the LAN when it is booted they will boot normally to the login screen in under 5 minutes. They only do this if they have a LAN connection. Have you checked the event viewer on the servers to check if there are any errors - this could be the cause of it.

IT is an IT service provider. Sounds like Group Policy processing. Sometimes you see this in environments that have too many GPO's or a lot!!! Processing all these settings can slow things way down at boot time, but if all those settings are needed then maybe its an acceptable load at boot time.

On the other hand you could well have some garbage information or erroneous information referenced in GPOs that are holding up your group policy clients on those machines. I don't have very many policies applied. I strongly suspect this is not a GPO issue but is something wrong with the affected servers 2 currently. The winlogon notification subscriber is taking long time to handle the notification event CreateSession.

Since the machines boot quickly when not on the LAN, then you know it's a communication problem. Windows says, "I have no network connection so why even try to run Group Policy processing. Unless you had a literal gobstop of GPOs hell, I'd guess in the tens of thousandsa lot of GPOs wouldn't cause minute boot times. It should indicate what's taking so long. Just to make my headaches worse I am now getting "Access Denied" when I try to run gpresult from an admin command prompt.

Running Windows Server SP2 32bit with all current patches applied. Citrix Xenapp 5. I have a rather annoying issue at hand. The users receive the message "Please wait for the group Policy Client…. At this point users are not able to establish new connections or log off their sessions.

For the time being, the users would have to call the service desk and then have their winlogon. Once all users of logged off the server I give the server a reboot and things are good for another month or so and then the issue will return randomly on one of the 7 servers. Any assistance with this great annoyance would greatly be appreciated.

To narrow down the issue, please create a new user in a test OU. Then blocked inheritance on the OU and did not configure any policy. If the user can logon successfully, then configure a roaming profile for the same user. If so, issue seems to be on the TS box with the current configuration. Thanks for the response. I've already disabled IPv6. Once again this is a difficult task to troubleshoot as these 7 servers are production.

Once again this issue does not happen on every login. This issue only occours once every months on 1 random server in the pool of 7. I appeciate your reply.

Commented: Before getting you to do lots of trawling through logs, it would be worth taking the server off your Active Directory and re-joining it. Just add it to a workgroup, reboot, then re-join to your AD and reboot again. Author Commented: The server in question is an Exchange Server.

As I said the last time you posted this question, I think you are on your way to solving the problem if safe mode solves the issue. Next steps is to use System Configuration Editor to go through and disable all the non-microsoft services. If you have an anti-virus I would start with that.

Thanks for responding. I agree that it is worth trying. It will likely take me a week to cycle through all of the servers and it get it installed so I won't know if it solves the issue right away. I am open to additional suggestions from you or others in the meantime. I ran into some problems with policies applying properly when using an older version of Citrix Profile Management. Updating to Profile Management 4. I experience this on a regular basis in my XA 6 farm.

I have our L2 support team compiling information on user IDs to try and track. A quick reset of the profile resolves the issue. I do have "Do not logon users with temporary profiles" Group Policy setting configured. I don't want to change this GPO setting for security reasons, plus I am not a big fan of opening everything up just to get it to work correctly.

I support the medical field and the profiles that corrupt most often are the medical providers that move between exam rooms to different PCs. Considering going to Citrix Profile Management in my Dev farm for testing, but I don't know if this will break existing AD account roaming profiles and folder redirection or if I have to create new user accounts for testing.

Any input on possible profile corruption causes would help Google time. I'll come back and the mark the question answered after a bit more time - once I feel confident that the issue has been resolved.


So KB made no difference for us. Only way to get users back on track is to delete and re create roaming RDS Profile. DAT file was exactly KB as well. I think that there is some similarity.

For almost a year now I have not been able to find solution to this problemit is really frustrating. We had the same error, but we weren't getting corrupted pro files. Instead it was bloated App-V profiles. Even though the App-V client was configured to store user settings on a network share, it copies those setting to a local cache and syncs the files.

If users were assigned to too many applications it would cause the server to deny access. Anyone come across a solution for this? We are using Profile Management 4. Has anyone associated this with users Active Directory account token size? We related this issue to users accounts exceeding the default token size value due to too many group memberships.
